Description
"Jude Whetstone and Lyyndaya Kurtz are young, Amish, and in love... But the year is 1917, and Jude has also fallen in love with that newfangled invention, the aeroplane. Though the Amish communities in America have rejected the telephone and forbidden motorcar ownership, they have not yet reached a decision about soaring to the clouds as Jude loves to do in his 'Jenny' Curtiss JN-4. When the U.S. joins the war effort, young American men are expected to enlist. But Jude and other young Amish men in the colony are men of peace and exempt from military service. Nevertheless, the persecution of those who choose peace over war begins. The Amish are especially suspect since Germany is the enemy, and many of the Amish speak German. When Jude and his friends are rounded up and transported to a military base, Jude faces a decision that can save his friends and perhaps the entire community--but it will result in being shunned by those he loves, including his beloved "Lyyndy Lyyndy Lou."--P.
