Description
“Handsome, sensible, judicious and political” were some of the words used by an eighteenth-century contemporary to describe the Mohawk Indian woman, Molly Brant. They summarize the character and role of this important, influential and controversial figure. Some people used words such as “prudent,” “delightful,” and “agreeable,” while others spoke of her as “scolding,” and “a trouble maker” with a “violent temper.” She was helpmate, partner and consort to Sir William Johnson, one of the most powerful white men in colonial America, and mother of eight of his children. Brant was a vital link between the white world and that of the Six Nations of the Iroquois, before, during and after the American Revolution -- johnstownhistory.com.
