"The Gravel Grinder, an annual bike ride over rough unpaved roads above Crooked Lake, attracted over 150 cyclists. One of them never made it back to the finish line that day. The sheriff soon found herself trying to locate the missing rider and also solve the disappearance of the young retarded son of an African-American couple who had been working for a strange man who raised hogs on a farm near the Gravel Grind track. Carol's search for the missing man and boy eventually turned into a murder investigation and an effort to link these unpleasant developments to an outbreak of racial violence in Virginia.
