Esta podría ser una novela picaresca, aunque, según las recepcionistas de la clínica de gastroenterología donde al protagonista le practican una colonoscopia, bien podría ser una novela negra, con misterios intrincados, accidentes macabros, pruebas incriminatorias y dos sospechosos nada comunes: una peluquera bretona de pasado oscuro y un vigilante de supermercado obsesionado con escribir el testimonio de sus experiencias en la vida. Lo peor es que el protagonista ni se lo imagina, porque está demasiado preocupado por las consecuencias de la felicidad, ese sopor embriagador tan agradable que le hace temer haber caído en la trampa del aburguesamiento. Suele repetirse que no hay literatura después de un final feliz, que la «buena literatura» no es una literatura feliz. La felicidad es banal, superficial, frívola, carece de conflictos. Y sin conflicto, se dice, no hay literatura. ¿Será de verdad imposible escribir una novela feliz sobre la felicidad? ¿Una novela profunda y al mismo tiempo frívola, trascendental y banal, un relato gozoso que no sea pura evasión egoísta? El protagonista de esta historia no está seguro e intenta descubrirlo con la ayuda de su familia; en cuanto al autor de estas páginas, sospechamos que necesita creer que sí.
