A girl named Phoebe finds and adopts a field mouse she names Moosie. They have something in common--their concern about food. Phoebe doesn't know what to feed her pet mouse, and she also struggles with her own eating. She loves food but lives in a culture that worships thinness. The problem comes to a head when her boyfriend gives her a big piece to chocolate that she can't quit nibbling. Finally she throws it away in the only place she won't go to retrieve it, the brushline behind her house. It lands practically in the lap of Moosie, who has fled the indoors to escape the house cat. The chocolate meteor which falls from the sky sets into motion events that affect the lives of many brushline residents, especially one little field mouse named Moosie.
